A big problem I face as I restart my academic career is getting a sense of the state of the art. I've kept a weather eye on the field, and dabbled here and there over the years with various AI (or AI-like) programming, but nothing ultra elaborate and certainly not long-term research worthy.
To catch up, I've embarked on quite the "read in" to reacquaint myself with the ideas and controversies of AI. My to-be-read stack of books, journals and papers is growing daily (and at an alarming rate). Here are some of the books either in progress or waiting, in no particular order:

"The Mind's I" by Hofstadter and Dennett is a fascinating collection of stories that illustrate problems, both computational and philosophical, in discovering and recreating the "essence of consciousness". Anything by Hofstadter is great, really.
Congrats on going back for you PhD. I'm jealous; you're studying stuff that I've been obsessed with for years!
